To Be Alone

If you can’t eat by yourself, how do you expect to have a baby by yourself?”

“I can eat by myself!”

“When have you ever?”

“When certain people leave the table and I am not finished!”

I’ve been watching a lot of Friends lately–I’m in the process of making it through all ten seasons of the show. In fact, I’m nearly to the end of the last season and will probably have a crisis of identity and livelihood once I’m finished–in the words of one of my current roommates: “They’ve become your friends.” Uh. Yeah. Basically.

Anywho.

Friends aside, I’ve also recently been thinking a lot about the concept of being alone. I just moved to a new city and though I know my temporary roommates and occasionally do things with them, we’re all busy and have different interests. More often than not, I’ve been finding myself doing my own thing in my spare time–going out and visiting new places on my own, exploring DC and the area around it.

Naturally, being the writer I am, when I spend a lot of time thinking about something, I usually turn to eventually writing Continue reading “To Be Alone”

When Did Thin Shaming Become an Okay Thing?

“You’re a vegetarian? No wonder you’re so skinny.”

(Well, I lost a few pounds when I quit eating meat, but I’ve always been thin. It’s kind of just the way my body is)

“Do you ever eat anything other than a salad?”

(Um. Yes. It’s just easy to pack for lunch…hence why I eat them a lot)

“Oh c’mon, like you really need to worry about packing the pounds on…”

(Maybe not, but I still like to eat healthy because it makes me feel better in general…and I prefer feeling better in general)

Here, I give you a few of the comments I’ve received from my coworkers about my weight throughout the course of the summer. Kind of annoying, ay?

Yes, yes, very annoying.

I wrote this a long time ago and I write and blog completely different (and, quite frankly, better) now. That said, I think there are some worthy points in this post. Hence, the reblog.

Seriously. Thin shaming. Fat shaming. They’re both hurtful and they both do more harm than good. JUST STOP WITH THE BOTH!

It's a Britta Bottle!

Just to clarify, this was originally published on my first blog, “Letting the World Fall Into Place” on February 7, 2014, under the title “Let’s Talk About Body Image.” It’s a post I’ve always been extremely proud of…probably my strongest post from “Letting the World Fall Into Place,” and I kind of just want to get it out there again for a new audience;  I wouldn’t be publishing this again if it wasn’t something I felt strongly about. I changed the title to something I felt better represents my original goals with the post (because really, when did thin shaming become a thing? There are so many things wrong with it!) and I’ve made a few slight changes to the post itself; otherwise, it very closely resembles the original post from February. So, without further ado…

Today, this image showed up on my facebook newsfeed:

Now let me just say, I think…

Quotes + Challenge = I’m Sold

A few days ago, I was nominated for the 3 Days, 3 Quotes Challenge by My Overflowing Thoughts. Now, I haven’t been accepting any nominations of late (life is already so busy, there’s so many other things I’d rather take the time to blog about, so many of the nominations are repeats as it is, etc.). That said, this one got me just because I LOVE QUOTES SO MUCH. Oh man, a really good quote makes me weak in the knees, near tears, gives my heart a little throb. I just couldn’t pass it up.

The rules are simple–post a quote a day for three days and nominate three people each day. I am choosing not to pass on nominations, though anyone who would like to participate is more than welcome to. Instead, I’m going to give a short description of why I chose each quote beneath the posted quote.

Of course, the moment I was nominated for this, I couldn’t think of any quotes, though there are many I love…so I resorted to the Pinterest account I never Continue reading “Quotes + Challenge = I’m Sold”
