#WeekendCoffeeShare–To Grandmother’s House We Go

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I had an absolutely lovely long weekend at my grandparent’s house down in their small town in Iowa. My mom, brother, and I left on Saturday morning; we had a lovely day with Grandma, going into town and visiting all the small shops on Main Street, a ritual we have whenever we go down to visit. On Sunday, my mom and brother left; given that I currently don’t have a job and wanted a few extra days visiting, I stayed. Part of the reasons for our visit (besides spending quality time with family) was to get my car, which my grandpa–a retired pilot–stored in his airplane hanger while I was abroad. With my car, I could stay in Iowa as long as I pleased and didn’t need to go back with my mom and brother. So, I spent the next couple days mostly hanging out with Grandma, exploring some places that were new to me while also visiting old favorites in the area. It was wonderful. If you haven’t noticed, Grandpa is glaringly absent from any tales of visiting my grandparent’s. That’s because my grandpa prefers to spend most of his time in his hanger or the garage doing whatever retired pilots do in their free time. He’s a tried and true introvert, if there ever was one.

Selfie time with Grams ❤

If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that nothing productive in terms of job searching happened while at Grandma’s. The most productive thing I accomplished while there was collaboratively finishing a crossword puzzle with Grandma. I’ve Continue reading “#WeekendCoffeeShare–To Grandmother’s House We Go”

#WeekendCoffeeShare–Drinks and Work and BLOG CH-CH-CHANGES

If we were having coffee, I’d assure you that, OH MY GAWD, I SWEAR I’M NOT A DRUNK.

The last time I was even remotely tipsy was when I wrote this post.

(I’d also assure you that that post was a hit and blogging drunk is fun)

All my friends are far away and I have no one to drink with but myself. #collegegraduateproblems

(yes, I’m writing this post slightly intoxicated, again)

— — — —

If we were having coffeeI discuss how generally boring and uninspiring this week was. At least at work. Seriously. Summer is coming to an end, folks, and that means less people want milkshakes and smoothies. And even though I’ve been making more hot coffee drinks than I Continue reading “#WeekendCoffeeShare–Drinks and Work and BLOG CH-CH-CHANGES”

What am I Doing With My Life? (Or, Getting Through this Awkward Transition Period)

I’m struggling for something to write right now and part of me is thinking “well, nothing interesting has happened lately.”

I mean, I’m an unemployed college graduate living at home.

For the time being.

I’ve been searching for jobs and preparing for Thailand, but life is rather uninspiring right now. Cool things are going to happen in the future, yes, but they seem so far off.

Of course, things have been happening. I have been applying for jobs and Thailand preparations are in progress. I spent all of Saturday with an old friend from high school whom I haven’t seen since December.  That friend happens to have four absolutely precious two week old kittens at her place, so, naturally, I spent the first Continue reading “What am I Doing With My Life? WRITING IS MESSY, OKAY?

So, this thing called the writing process is a bitch sometimes.

The final draft of my senior seminar paper is due tomorrow. Naturally, I am scrambling to finish it in time. What else? I mean, you all know how much of a procrastinating senior I am by now.

Well, really, I’m also incredibly overwhelmed by this mess of a paper. I was determined to be productive yesterday but I got maybe 100 words written and just couldn’t do it anymore. This draft is so messy and I didn’t even know
where to begin.

I was on the verge of panicking…

…until I remembered a little trick courtesy of my wonderful comp studies Continue reading “WRITING IS MESSY, OKAY?”

A Digression (Or Dear Britta, It’s Time to Get Your Shit Together…Again)

Hey you, yeah I’m talking to you. You’re becoming the laziest person I know. How bout you snap out of that right now?

I’m talking about myself, of course.

Since spring break, I have been the laziest. A couple days of productivity here and there. But mostly lazier than lazy. Even writing this post is going to be a struggle. I can already tell. I don’t want to do anything right now. BUT I HAVE Continue reading “A Digression (Or Dear Britta, It’s Time to Get Your Shit Together…Again)”

Things to Keep in Mind

So, it’s that time in the semester when I have way too much to do and don’t want to do any of it. One of my friends asked me a couple of weeks ago, “I noticed you’ve been blogging a lot…how do you have time for that?” Meaning–“you are taking 16 grueling credits this semester, you have a practically full time job as a student hall director, you’re involved in way too many extracurriculars for your own good, somehow you manage to work out a few times a week, and you still have time to blog? ARE YOU CRAZY?”

Well, in short, no. At least I don’t think so. However, I am having a touch of senioritis and have become an expert procrastinator.

That being said, it’s getting down to crunch time. I don’t want to do anything. This is a problem. I also haven’t been using my time wisely as it is, which I’m not proud of. So, to motivate myself, I have decided to write a list of things that I need to keep in mind as I push through these next five weeks. Really, this list is useful for anytime of the year, though it resonates with me particularly in this high stress, low motivation time period as the end of the semester looms over me.

Without further ado… Continue reading “Things to Keep in Mind”

Stargazing on the Prairie

I am lucky enough to live in a location where the stars are visible at night. There might not be a lot to do out here out on the prairie, but go to any city in the world and you wont see the myriad of stars that fill up a clear night sky in a rural setting.

Tonight I went stargazing with some friends. We bundled up in warm clothes, as it is a chilly (though beautiful) autumn night; I brought out my TOMS Nepal Boots that are oooh so toasty for the first time since last winter and grabbed my mittens for good measure (and boy, did I end up needing them). We headed out to a field that is close to campus, lied down on the grass, and found ourselves viewing a completely different world.

I was feeling really anxious today, I think because I’ve been overwhelmed by my history senior seminar. I absolutely love my topic (I’m examining the Blair family as a case study for understanding pre-Civil War Northern Nationalism, which I find to be so interesting), but I think I have too many sources and I don’t Continue reading “Stargazing on the Prairie”
