Last week, late at night, I penned a quick haiku that I posted to my blog. I’ve never been one for writing poetry and thought it was a one time deal…
That is, until I found myself writing out another haiku the next day. I played with words–added, took away, flipped around–until I had created something I was satisfied with.
I realized that I like the challenge that haiku writing brings to the table. 5-7-5. Seventeen syllables, three lines, five in the first and third, seven in the second–precise, ordered, intact. The challenge of telling a story in seventeen syllables is so intriguing to me; it’s so simple, yet so complex.
One of the goals of this blog is for me to push myself as a writer, to think more creatively as a writer; I’m realizing that haikus are one way for me to do that. So, with this in mind, I am introducing Hump Day Haikus as a regular feature to It’s a Britta Bottle! I can’t promise they will be good or inspiring or beautiful, but they will be me. Wholly and entirely me. One of my blogger friends, Lia, told me a few weeks ago that inspiration can be found everywhere. I truly believe that, and I hope to truly embrace that philosophy with these haikus.
Of course, you’ll still find my other posts about life and random musings and such. I’ll still be posting journal entries occasionally. I would like to move to a regular posting schedule one of these days. Ideally, a Monday, Wednesday, Friday dealy. However, that’s easier said than done while I’m still in college. For now, just expect Hump Day Haikus on Wednesday as a given. Maybe a posting schedule will come in time, maybe it wont.
I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!
