The Beauty of a College Night Off

Yesterday, one of my good friends turned 21.

Naturally, being the college students that we are, we got together for a night of drinking and celebration.

My friend wanted a more intimate experience on her birthday instead of going out to bars, so we stayed in and celebrated in another friend’s apartment. The plan was for six of us girlfriends to get together for a girls night; it only ended up being three of us for the whole night because one friend got really sick, another wasn’t feeling that great, and another’s boyfriend ended up visiting and she didn’t want to intrude on our girls night with him. We had a few visitors throughout the night and two of our guy friends stopped by briefly, but otherwise it was just the three of us.

It was a good night. I’m not a big drinker–getting wasted every weekend is certainly not my idea of fun–but I do enjoy drinking occasionally. My friends joke that I don’t drink that often but when I do, I’m very “passionate” about it. Why? well, I usually end up getting drunk. You could say my motto is “go big or go home.”  That being said, it doesn’t take much for me to get drunk since I’m such a light weight…so going big for me is like, four drinks.

Last night, I had enough where I felt a very pleasant type of intoxicated. I did not feel anxious as I sometimes do when I drink, nor had I reached the point of being sloppy drunk, which has happened on more than one occasion. My drunken state last night was of the best kind, made better by being in the company of good friends.

Given the stress I’ve been experiencing lately, it was a much needed night off of friends and fun. Nights like last night are the one’s I’ll keep with me forever. They’re the nights I’ll look back to at after I graduate and think, “darn, I had fun in college.” It was great to be with some of my favorite people. I loved being able to celebrate with my friend on her twenty-first birthday. I also bought some “grown up” egg nog when we stopped at the liquor store. Now, I don’t know about you, but I love me some egg nog and had never had it spiked with liquor before. It’s probably my best alcoholic purchase to date. Tis the season to be jolly!

Sometimes you just need to take a night off and forget about responsibilities for a while. After last night, I feel refreshed and ready to tackle all the homework I have to finish within the next two weeks. It’s all gonna get done and soon enough it will be winter break; life really is good, despite all the stressors of the world.

Our night was spent inside away from the cold Minnesota winter weather. There was no jumping for joy on a beach. However, this picture still sums up nicely how I feel about last night.
